Hey Brent: so you woulda been 54-yrs/old today, huh? Well, everything has remained the same...only worse. Still the same amount of Saints and snakes as when you traveled the crooked path of this rock. Kinda cool to have the same birthday as Samuel Taylor Coleridge...and Alfred Nobel....and Dizzy Gillespie. And you got Timothy Leary's Birthday tomorrow -- we are under a New Moon on this island tonight so you can be sure that we will be celebrating more than usual with memories of you front-and-center. I've got that wild Scarlet>Fire playin' right now from 1981 (May 6)...Jerry sure did Love you, Brent, and that's all that matters. Hope to see you and the old crew someday soon, -- AshesRisingAndFalling

Ashes, I went to listen to the Scarlet>Fire on May 6, 1981. Me thinks a mistake was made conserning the date of this wild version.

Later.

DJ Get Down! -- friggin' idiot strikes again!! I can't blame this mistake on the pain meds; this one is pure stupidity on my part. Thank you for catching this mistake; now I wonder how many other people I misled.... thank god my dog knows how to type otherwise I wouldn't be able to post messages on this great Forum...
"DJ" and others: Dick's Pick #13 is from Nassau Coliseum, 1981-05-06. Disc #2 lists four tunes: "Minglewood>High Time>Lost Sailor> Saint" At the end of "Saint" there is approx one minute of silence and then the "Scarlet > Fire" appears out of the silence. Unless I screw this up yet again, that "Scarlet>Fire" is from 1979-11-01 (also Nassau Coliseum)
DJ - thanks a lot for catching the mistake. (Either my laptop is screwed-up or the archive is messed but I cannot access 1979 shows right now to see if it is available here) - if you have a momemt, send me an email:

(there are hidden tracks on at least one other Dick's Pick as well)

It's not strange that my fav show 10/27/79 Cape Cod is from Brent's first tour. Super keyboards and what a voice.....

Ashes-

That was so beautiful you moved me to tears for the 2nd time today- all you said about Jerry and Brent's relationship- so true- I heard it so often as those were my touring years- I will have to find my own tribute- I am sure before midnight I will play 7/7/89 Blow Away- any one who lurks or posts here who has never heard it needs to now- it is a most poignant tribute to the man- listen to the passion that day- listen to the soul- listen to that man and learn

Brent was my favorite of the keyboardists. I thought he added more to the sound than any of the others.

Happy Birthday Brent.....We miss you!

Very well said by both of you... Brent was my favorite on the keys, i love the B3 and all of his other touches. Isn't that why Jerry and Phil switched sides, so Jerry could interact with Brent more? I will listen to that Blow Away tonight, always liked the tune anyhow. Thanks guy's, I didn't realize it was his birthday!

Brent, thank you for what you gave us, I'm sure Pig and Janis and all up there in heaven get a chuckle the way Garcia looks over his glasses, from his 3rd eye into yours.

"Isn't that why Jerry and Phil switched sides, so Jerry could interact with Brent more?"

often wondered if this was Jerry's way of taking the lad under his wing...but later realized that the stereo mix in the 70's was split with Jerry on one side and Keith on the other...into the early 80's the sound evolved into Bob and Brent split per side and Jerry center in the mix, perhaps leading to Jer's new position between Bob and Brent?...just a thought

will always remember those ear to ear smiles Jerry flashed you when the crowd delivered thunderous applause at the conclusions of your solos during my last shows, New Years 88...RIP Brent
